General Information

Welcome

Welcome to the homepage of WPMC '2002 to be held in Honolulu, Hawaii on October 27-30, 2002.

On behalf of the organizing committee, I invite you to participate in the Fifth International Symposium on Wireless Personal Multimedia Communications (WPMC '2002).

The WPMC '2002 theme "CONVERGENCE OF THE WIRELESS AND INTERNET" is particularly timely with the deployment of the third generation (IMT-2000/UMTS) system in Japan, to be followed by European and other countries. Moreover, extensive efforts are being undertaken in various regional and international standards bodies to define various broadband wireless access standards for a variety of applications including fixed wireless access (FWA), wireless local and personal area networks (LANs, PANs), wireless home multimedia, and broadband mobile wireless systems such as 4G mobile and dedicated short range communication systems (DSRC).

WPMC '2002 technical program consists of 6 tutorials and 6 technical
overview sessions by top experts, and 45 technical sessions that covers
the full range of wireless communications. The technical program is
augmented by a track of 9 panel sessions that promise to generate
spirited exchanges by invited panelists from the key wireless industries
and universities.

Message from TPC Co-Chairs

As the world anxiously awaits the broad deployment of 3G systems, a wealth of research and innovation continues in the evolution of current systems and the “Convergence of wireless and the internet”, which is the theme of WPMC ‘2002.  This conference promises to be an inspiring and insightful experience containing a breadth of information on this theme, with 6 focused tutorials, 9 lively panel sessions from top industry invited experts, and 45 technical sessions presented by authors from more than 30 countries spanning every continent and region of the world. WPMC ‘2002 commences with the tutorials, followed by an opening plenary leading into 6 stimulating technical overviews as an opener for the innovative technical sessions.

In addition to the depth provided by the technical sessions, the panels are interspersed throughout the conference providing the attendee with the options to fully obtain the breadth of knowledge and “big picture” context of wireless/internet convergence. We trust you  will also be inspired by our keynote speakers as they provide us a vision of key advanced technologies behind the convergence and the ever insatiable customer demand for higher data rates. Finally, we expect that you will find your attendance fruitful in the exchange of ideas, concepts, and friendship that you will find in the exchange with other colleagues and researchers with similar interest. In closing, we bid you a warm ALOHA as you enjoy these technical and academic discussions in our beautiful setting of this years conference in the Hawaiian Islands.

About WPMC

An active global platform was created in 1998 for discussions on future wireless personal multimedia communications by organizing The International Symposium on Wireless Personal Multimedia Communications (WPMC) as an annual event.

The first symposium was held in 1998 at Yokosuka Research Park (YRP), Japan, the second symposium was held in 1999 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, the third symposium was held in Bangkok, Thailand, and the fourth symposium was held on September 9-12, 2001 in Aalborg, Denmark.

The fifth symposium will address the open challenges to realize wireless and Internet communication systems.

The objective of the WPMC is to continue to accelerate the existing momentum for establishing a global forum for Wireless Personal Multimedia Communications. The Symposium brings together research and development activities, taking place at an intense and breathtaking pace, for a coordinated approach to future generation wireless communication systems. WPMC will continue to develop the theme  “CONVERGENCE OF THE WIRELESS AND INTERNET WORLDS,” in future symposia which will be held in various countries around the world.
